In the video installation Gyres 1-3 by Ellie Ga, life plans are interwoven with urgent social problems such as environmental pollution or refugee migration. In oceanography, the eponymous Gyres refer to a system of circulating eddies and ocean currents – just as Ga's visual essay virtuously ›drifts‹ through aspects of culture, mysticism, and world politics, exploring the human, ecological, and political catastrophes of which flotsam can tell stories.
