For The Time Being

This remarkable debut film about a family reunion gives you a feeling for tranquillity and timelessness of the summer heat and atmosphere of the Sierra Morena.

Synopsis

The hills are sun-bleached, sandy paths cross the land, and fences demarcate the property lines. Down in the valley is a dried-up reservoir. Larissa is travelling with her nine-year-old twins to the finca of her Spanish mother-in-law. Pilar is preparing for her son and grandchildren’s arrival, while the younger daughter Amalia goes about her work. When the father doesn’t arrive as planned, they must find another way to face each other and the place, which is both strange and familiar … In documentary-like images, the director captures the emotional worlds of her protagonists through subtle gestures and in quiet moments. The film’s narrative rhythm is characterised by a state of waiting, which slows life down, just like the persistent summer heat – making the place and the nature around it a feast for the senses.
